ON-LINE CENSUS CATALOGUE OF THE VASCULAR FLORA OF IRELAND
An up-to-date listing of the Vascular Flora of Ireland based upon published or herbarium records for native and naturalised alien taxa recorded in the 40 vice-counties of Ireland.
Publication of vice-county records of vascular plants in Ireland was begun by Robert Lloyd Praeger in Irish Topographical Botany (Praeger 1901).
Additions to that list were made in a number of subsequent publications by Praeger (1902, 1906, 1929, 1932 and 1934) and an updated census of the distribution was
included in The Botanist in Ireland (Praeger 1934). The first edition of the Census Catalogue of the Flora of Ireland by Scannell and Synnott was published in 1972.
Following the second edition in 1987, the sources for all the records made since 1934 were published (Scannell and Synnott 1989 and 1990).
Those sources included the herbarium of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, from which many unpublished records were derived.
The Catalogue is arranged with a separate page for each family or larger grouping, and all species names are arranged alphabetically for ease of use.
For each entry there are four separate sets of information.
ITB | Firstly records collated by Praeger in 1901 and up to 1934 (given in a second line), for which no details are given, other than the bare fact that they were known from that vice-county at the time.
|
CC | Secondly, those records that appear in the Census Catalogues, editions 1 and 2, for which the information collated by Scannell and Synnott is given for each new vice county record.
|
SR | Thirdly, those records collated by Sylvia Reynolds in A catalogue of alien plants in Ireland, published in 2002. Where these records overlap with the foregoing, they are given again.
|
DBN | Fourthly, new records avaliable in the literature, or as herbarium specimens collected since 1987, many of those appearing in Atlas 2000, however are as yet unsupported by literature citations or herbarium specimens.
